Southern Sass and Killer Cravings by Kate Young

Southern Sass and Killer Cravings by Kate Young

Southern Sass and Killer Cravings is the first book in a brand new cozy mystery series. This book fits in perfectly with other culinary cozies and even some paranormal as our MC is being “haunted” by her dead mother. I use quotes around haunted because there is nothing malevolent about it, just that her mother who has passed is speaking to her about the murder that has taken place.  For the most part, I thought this was a cute cozy. I did find it to drag in places and I found myself skipping around a bit, but it’s certainly worth the read for those who enjoy the genre. It could be a case of “it’s me, not you” that made it feel a little slow, […]

Murder Lo Mein by Vivien Chien

Murder Lo Mein is the third book in the Noodle Shop mystery series and I think it’s my favorite to date! This could be due to the fact that I love Lo Mein… In any event, this is another fantastic addition to the series and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a culinary cozy, Chinese food, and murder! In Murder Lo Mein, readers will become reacquainted with Lana Lee, the Noodle House (her family business), and a slew of amazing secondary characters. Things are going great in Lana’s life- she has a new boyfriend (Detective Trudeau), she’s finally feeling at home when shes working in her family business (she wasn’t excited about it at first), and her restaurant is taking part in a […]

Leave No Scone Unturned by Denise Swanson

Leave No Scone Unturned by Denise Swanson

Leave No Scone Unturned is the second book in the Chef-to-Go mystery series! One of my favorite things about this series is how Denise Swanson makes the murder so complex. They aren’t your average mysteries where it’s easy to spot the killer and the actual murders that take place are big deals. It’s not over something small. This makes the stories much more intriguing and easy to devour. That being said, I recommend that if you chose to read this series that you read the books in order. Some cozy mysteries can be read in whatever order you choose but this series has a budding romance and friendships that need to be followed in order. Otherwise, things will be spoiled.  If you are a fan […]

One Potato, Two Potato, Dead by Lynn Cahoon

One Potato, Two Potato, Dead is the third installment in the Farm-to-Fork mystery series! Lynn Cahoon is a wonderful mystery writer and I am always anxious for her next novel (especially within this series). She makes her characters lovable, tough, and charming. With that being said, I truly love this series and think this is the perfect addition. While I wish there were more recipes included (I love to replicate them) I didn’t have any issues with the book overall. I think the mystery aspects were fantastic, I didn’t figure out the killer until it was revealed (although I admittedly had my suspicions) and I loved all the talk of soup (soup was the prominent source of foods throughout the book).  If you are a […]

Genre Guides: Culinary Cozy Mystery Starters

Hi, everyone! I have had some questions from readers and where to start when it comes to cozy mysteries so I decided to put together some genre guides! I will do my best to post these on a weekly basis but sometimes life gets in the way and things get put to the side. I promise though that I will do my best! In this first guide I will talk about culinary cozy mysteries. By definition, these types of cozies focus on amateur sleuths who work in the culinary field. Bakers, those who own restaurants, and things like that. This is actually my personal favorite sub-genre of cozies because I love baking myself and also because the authors typically add recipes throughout the story.   THE […]

Pie Hard by Kirsten Weiss

Pie Hard is the third book in the Pie Town Mystery series. I have come to really love this series and am always super excited when a new installment is added. Kristen Weiss has with transforming her characters to people and I am always happy to catch up with Val and Charlene. Whether these two are baking some pies or solving a murder I always know I am in for a treat! That is no different with this book and I felt the excitement throughout. If you are a cozy mystery reader and haven’t had a chance to check out this series yet I highly recommend it! Not only will you find delicious recipes and an amazing set of characters but you will be itching […]

Restaurant Weeks Are Murder by Libby Klein

BOOK REVIEW I just adore this series! Poppy is such a fun character with a sparkling personality and sense of humor. Not only am I devouring the mystery but I am laughing at the things she thinks and says. Another thing that makes this series is Poppy’s great aunt Ginny. She reminds me of Grandma Mazur from the Stephanie Plum series- she’s silly, quirky, and downright hilarious! Overall, I think this is one of the best cozy series around (I place it in my top 5 favorite cozy series of all time), and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the genre.  In this installment, Poppy is taking part in Restaurant Week which is a cooking competition. Poppy is working with her ex fiance Tim […]

Batter off Dead by Maymee Bell

My Thoughts Maymee Bell (aka Tonya Kappes) is one of my favorite cozy mystery writers! She builds worlds though her words and brings these characters to life. The amount of southern charm that exudes from these characters is precious and one cannot help falling instantly in love with them. The bonus of course is the delicious recipes that are included in the story and I cannot wait to try them! If you are a culinary cozy mystery lover like myself (or a fan of Joanne Fluke, another author of the genre) this book and series is a must read!

Bleeding Tarts by Kristen Weiss

Bleeding Tarts by Kristen Weiss

There was absolutely nothing that I didn’t like about this book! It’s fun, filled with humor, and has relatable characters. Some are a bit eccentric (Charlene and Marla) but I loved them because of it! I have to admit, I was weary going into this one because I didn’t LOVE the first book in the series, but this one was perfection. I’m really glad I decided to give it a try.  Bleeding Tarts is the second book in the Pie Town Mystery series which follows Val (the owner of Pie Town) and her sidekick Charlene. Val is your typical woman in her early 30’s who has a knack for figuring out the who-dun-it in murders. Charlene is her eccentric sidekick who is a bit wacko, […]

Cake and Punishment by Maymee Bell

My Thoughts Wohoo! This book is the PERFECT southern, cozy mystery. And, it’s the first in a brand new series- one of which I am very much anticipating for the future (can I have it now, please!?!). Also, this book is a culinary cozy, meaning a lot of it revolves around a murder AND delicious desserts, which is an absolute FAVORITE of mine. If any of this sounds good to you, then this is a must read! Even if you aren’t a fan of the genre or are new to it, I would highly recommend starting it with this one. It’s delightful, fun, and scrumptious! I can’t wait to try some of the recipes from the book.  Without getting to deep into the plot, I’ll […]
