Multi-published romance author Nona Raines writing as N. Raines.

She never met a stray she didn't love…

In high school, Sam Pennywell had a massive crush on Rick Russo. But he was her cousin’s boyfriend and strictly off-limits. Meeting Rick again years later, she can hardly recognize the man he’s become.

As a paramedic, Rick’s career is all about helping others. But in the line of duty, he’s become one of the injured. He’s caught in a dark place he can’t escape on his own. He can't make Sam any promises of love. Promises are too easily broken.

Sam spends her life taking care of sick and homeless animals. She's never met a stray she didn't love, and Rick is the most important rescue she'll ever make.

Gah! I adored this book to pieces! This book is a sweet, pleasant, and light read that is hard to put down. I found myself immediately connecting with the characters; Rick and Sam, and even enjoyed and connected with the secondary characters; Britt and Sam’s dad. Each and every one of them are very loveable and interesting to say the least. In addition to this, I was immediately drawn to the story. The first chapter really sucks you in and gives you a good glimpse as to how the story is going to play out. This is good for those readers who read a chapter before committing to a book in its entirety. This is a really sweet and engaging read and I highly recommend it to all romance fans.

So, what’s so great about this book? Well, the characters seem like old friends (to us readers). For some reason, I was able to really relate to Sam in terms of where she is in life and how her life is playing out. You see, Sam is living at home taking care of her father who has had some heart troubles. Seeing as she already lost a parent she is doing everything she can to make sure her father takes care of himself so she doesn’t lose him like she did her mother. But in doing this, Sam has also had to sacrifice many things that all teenagers crave- the chance to go away to college, the chance to really date and live her life like other people her age, and just being on her own. But once Rick unexpectedly enters her life, her outlook on men, dating, and even life begin to slowly change. Who knew, she only needed a little push to live a little on her own terms…

Rick is the type of character that all women will swoon over. He is smart and sexy but hiding from something painful in his past. Readers won’t learn of this pain until the end of the book which gives his character a bit of mystery and intrigue as well. What I also liked about Rick is the way her interacted with Sam. He isn’t the bad boy type that uses women and throws them away. Or at least, this isn’t how I saw him. While we don’t get a real glimpse as to his past dating habits I think readers will agree that he seems like an overall good guy with good morals. It’s just getting over his past pain that seems hard for him. Overall though, he is definitely book boyfriend material and a sweet character that I have come to personally love.

Overall, this is a fantastic romance book that I think fans of this genre will really enjoy. It gives readers the feel, is a bit sexy in some scenes, and is very real in terms of navigating relationships. If you haven’t picked this book up yet, than you should! It’s a great read, one that I very much enjoyed. I wouldn’t mind reading more books by the author in the future!
