On a soft summer night in Vermont, 12-year-old Lisa went into the woods behind her house and never came out again. Before she disappeared, she told her little brother, Sam, about a door that led to a magical place where she would meet the King of the Fairies and become his queen.

Fifteen years later, Phoebe is in love with Sam, a practical, sensible man who doesn't fear the dark and doesn't have bad dreams - who, in fact, helps Phoebe ignore her own. But suddenly the couple is faced with a series of eerie, unexplained occurrences that challenge Sam's hardheaded, realistic view of the world. As they question their reality, a terrible promise Sam made years ago is revealed - a promise that could destroy them all.

“Storytelling wasn't about making things up. It was more like inviting the stories to come through her, let themselves be told.”

Woahhhh. This book took me on a ride! Author Jennifer McMahon knows how to deliver a creepy story that thrills! This book is beautifully written and successfully weaves a story about love, family secrets, and fairytales! I fell in love with this book from page 1 and couldn’t put it down until I finished all 447 pages. Readers be warned: this book is filled with the unexpected and none of your questions will truly be answered until the very last page… if at all. 

I highly recommend this book to fans of suspense, thrillers, dark fairytales, and horror. That’s a lot of genres put together, I know. BUT, McMahon DOES it in this book. She has quite the imagination. I am an instant FAN of her work and cannot wait to grab another in the near future!

Genre:Mixture of horror, thriller, suspense, mystery, and fantasy.
